i had a bible study with jehovah's witnesses and i stopped the studies with them a couple of years back.
It took a while . . . but one thing I have learned is that humans too have powerful instincts that we sometimes 'reason over the top of' . . . to our peril
I trust my instincts now with almost every decision . . . and for the most part . . . they serve me well.

observing how stranglers and those who get ahead of the wt org are left or get ostricised reminded me of similar dynamics in some animal societies, lions, for instance.
lions and housecats are the only felines that form groups.
pack members who get sick or injured and become unable to keep up w the pride are left behind.

When researching the subject of mind-control and factors making for vulnerability to conversion, I came across a [theory] that matched perfectly what you are saying.
Basically the hypothesis was one whereby the human need to 'group' exclusively, was a heriditary trait dating back to our hunter-gatherer (you could say "animal") roots . . . being centered in the group was essential to survival . . . any "passengers" or loners were a threat to the groups existence and quickly rejected. I viewed it on-line but failed to save it to file . . . if I can find it again I'll post it.

our public talk and wt study is on saturdays.
i was informed by an elder that i shouldn't leave right away after the meeting.. immediately i had a sinking feeling in my stomach.
but not as bad as i would have felt about it months ago.
Isn't it amazing they have NO human empathy or real emotions to see how uncomfortable this makes you ? It's because the JW cult has stolen aLL normal human empathetic and compassionate emotions away from them ! Now - They are just programmed robots put forth to do a job- find out who's faithful to the WT society and who isn't. Spiritual policemen of sorts.

my youngest brother is the family jw patriarch, and an elder, maybe even the po in a small northern town.
in an email i asked him if he ever hears from my kids.
i happen to know he lives in the same small town as my son, who might very well be an elder, too...by now.
My belief was that if I continued to believe the jw theology, I would self-destruct.

Your belief was absolutely correct and your instincts served you well . . . I did continue . . . and I did self-destruct . . . severe depression/anxiety disorder which has taken me 7 years to get on top of . . . that 7 years cost me heaps . . . hospitalisation, my job, my home, family relationships changed forever etc etc.
Such a heavy price tag can never be forgotten . . . or forgiven.

Interesting observations JJJ . . . I too succumbed to severe depression (better now tho) . . . the only studies I have found (I have them on file) showed JW's to be 4 times more likely to suicide and 16 times more likely to develop mental illnesses . . . staggering.
Another article pinpointed the indoctrination period for converts to be when most psychological damage occurs . . . I suspect you might have dodged that bullet too Salsa girl . . . I sure hope so.

I'm sure I heard that tomohawks were valued at around $2M at the time of the Iraq war (I may be wrong) . . . do they really cost that much? . . . there's not that much to them really . . . ???
